Smart Poodle Publishing Elementary School Program

“Laugh, Learn and Love to Read with Lilly P Badilly”

Debbie has participated in many author visits all over South Florida. The program is designed to get children excited about reading and learn more about the world. Debbie is a member of the National Council for Geographic Education and in advocate for geography literacy!

Here's what some of the many schools we have visited had to say about our program:
"I just want to thank you for coming to our school and sharing with our students your very entertaining and educational book! The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly is a well thought out educational book, with much detail and wonderful illustrations! It’s great that you are able to teach the students about where Costa Rica is (students need to learn about geography), in addition to all the information like “rhino beetles can carry 850 times their weight on their backs”. The students are learning important information in such a fun way! Your illustrations are terrific and keep the students attention with all the detail on each page! I also enjoyed listening to the CD with all the great voices that you portray when you read the story. The music on the CD matches the story and I am very impressed with your daughter’s musical ability, she is a great composer and wonderful pianist! Your book contains art, music, geography, earth science and a story about being brave! Thanks again for coming to our school and sharing your book, maps (both World and United States maps), your beautifully illustrated pictures (all created by hand), your music and your very educational- yet fun book! Our students and parents were very impressed with your presentation!" - Judy Christodoulides (Music Teacher – Liberty Park Elementary, Greenacres, Florida) Read about the visit here.

"Author Debbie Glade visited St. Mark Catholic School on Friday, April 24th, 2009. It was an exciting day for all students: Pre-K4-8th Grade. Primary students listened to the voice of Lilly Badilly and danced to music from the CD. Mrs. Glade presented her story with Costa Rican Rain Forest facts including pictures and sound recordings, locating areas on the world map, and a question and answer session. Intermediate students had a similar presentation with more of an emphasis on geographical facts. Middle School students listened intently to the importance of Reading and Writing and how to get started in the writing and publishing field. One of the more enjoyable parts of the presentation featured real life occurrences that were turned into stories, which Mrs. Glade presented to encourage writing based on every day life experiences. Middle School students enjoyed the presentation, particularly the variety of voices used by Mrs. Glade from the characters in her story. It was a enlightening experience and a day thoroughly enjoyed by all!" - Sandy Garcia, Librarian, St. Mark Catholic School, Southwest Ranches, FL Read about the visit here.

"Thank you so much for bringing your love of reading to the students of Liberty Park Elementary. I loved hearing the kids talk about your book and your daughter’s piano playing! They were so inspired by the story but they also got inspired by her musical ability too! I’ll definitely be telling other media specialists about your visit as well as your book. Thank you for everything!" - Renee Houck Media Specialist, Liberty Park Elementary, Greenacres, FL

"Debbie Glade visited our school and presented to all students in grades K-5. She is an author/illustrator from Hollywood, FL who comes in costume as her Lilly P. Badilly millipede character. Lilly P. Badilly takes a trip to the rainforest of Costa Rica. Debbie brings geography, plants and animals of the rainforest and FUN into her presentation. Debbie is entertaining and informative. Our students were excited and anxious to read her book and listen to the accompanying narrative CD with songs and music, The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly; Costa Rica." - Barbara Wegner, Media Specialist, Whispering Pines Elementary, Boca Raton, FL Read about the visit here.

"Thanks so much for being a part of our annual Literacy Fair. Your colorful presentation was a great addition to our event. We would love to schedule future presentations at the Library with you." - Maria Gomez, Literacy Director, Hialeah Education & Community Services Read about the visit here.

What a wonderful day for our students and I highly recommend a visit to your school as soon as possible.” - Ginger Sauter, Principal - The Village School, Naples, FL Read about the visit here.

"Our Elementary students were so excited to meet a real, live author after enjoying Debbie's "Lilly P. Badilly" book and CD during library time. It was a treat to see her dressed up as Lilly, using her characters' voices to entertain and inform them about writing and about Costa Rica. The Middle School students were fascinated with her personal and professional publishing journey, and they especially enjoyed how she used funny and sad real-life experiences to inspire her writing. Having Debbie visit our school was a special treat for us all." - Beth Mata, Librarian from Miami Christian School, Miami, FL Read about the visit here.

    . We offer 2 options:

    1. Deep Discount - Students may buy the book at a special 35% discount offered only to schools. Students pay only $15 per book/CD combo!

    2. Donation Back to the School/Library - To help raise money for your school/library, books will be sold at $20 (including tax). The book and CD are both educational and entertaining, suitable for children ages 5-10. On our program to the Lee County Library in Fort Myers, kids as young as 3 and as old as 11 enjoyed our event!

The CD is a complete narrated version of the story with different voices, an original musical score and authentic sound effects from the Costa Rican rainforest. Children who are just starting to read (and those too young to read) can listen to the CD as they follow along with the illustrations. Advanced early readers will also enjoy this story as the book is geared toward their reading level. No matter what the reader’s abilities, all will truly benefit from listening to the CD. It really makes the story come to life.

    The Smart Poodle Publishing

    Middle School Program

“So You Want to Be a Writer”

Debbie will visit your school or library to present a unique and educational 45-minute program for middle school students. This program is completely different than our Elementary School visit. Obviously middle school students are not the target age for the picture book/CD, The Travel Adventures of Lilly P Badilly: Costa Rica. But nevertheless, the students are fascinated by the life of a writer. Debbie will talk to them candidly about my bakground, the creative writing process, illustrating a book, recording it on CD and getting it manufactured and published. Students will hear all about the differences between self-publishing and traditional publishing. She will give them insight into the creative process, what inspires her and how she deals with writer’s block. She shares with the students the importance of reading in life no matter what career path they choose. They will receive specific examples of how to improve their writing habits. She also includes a special motivational section sharing my own personal challenges when she was their age, giving them a lot to think about after the program has ended.

Even though middle school age students generally prefer books for older readers, they have been interested in my book/CD after listening to the program and are eager to buy a copy. Plus the book is quite advanced as far as picture books go, and struggling middle school readers can benefit from it.

Please call Debbie for details about what the program entails. smartpoodle@comcast.net. 954-328-7465
