Mary,

I love your comments. I have always said that information taken from books and journals is far more reliable nd extensive than the quick quips we can find on the internet. If I were a teacher I'd require bonafide library research from my students rather than internet summaries. (Not that there is anything wrong with seeking info on line! It is jus often not enough.) Let's all continue to spread the good word about the importance of libraries and the people who dedicate their lives to working in them - just to help the people of their communities find the information they need.

I loved reading these essays. They inspired me and lifted my spirits. I know what we do and who we are, but it's true, people in general don't know what we do, and that of course is our problem. What we have now is a fast food culture who perceive the internet as being able to solve all their information needs. Just because one can accurately find a telephone number or address does not mean one can find authoritative, bonifide information. One may or may not find something, is something better than nothing? Does quality count? We've been singing about improved public relations and public service for over 40 years; I suggest we start singing louder. thank you for the beautiful essays. They are a tribute to our profession.

Dave,

Thank you for your kind words! The 44 librarians who entered this contest are ALL excellent wrtiters, and this contest trully overwhelmed the judges. Smart Poodle Publishing sponsored this contest in the hopes that non-librarians would come to appreciate all librarians do for us every day. Libraries remain the most underutilized and underappreciated resources we have available to us. By reading these essays, maybe more Americans will come to realize just how wonderful both librarians and libraries truly are!

Thanks to all of the winners and honorable mentions for such good descriptions of what is is like to be a librarian.

I'm a trustee of a public library in Illinois. I've only had one year of learning what I do to help further my own library and I applaud all of you who are such great writers and describers of what it means to be a librarian. My youngest brother is a librarian in Tupelo, Mississippi and I've come to know many of the librarians in the district where I serve as trustee. I applaud all of you who work in the library field for your hard work and dedication on behalf of your patrons!
